Choose GPS by application
Consider LoRa GPS for farms and fixed sites, cellular GPS for vehicles travelling between regions, battery trackers for unpowered assets, and RTK GNSS for precision work. GPS determines position; a separate communications network delivers it to a platform.
Farms and sites: LoRa GPS
LoRaWAN suits small, periodic location reports and needs gateway coverage and network services. Test behind hills, trees and buildings. No device SIM does not mean no operating cost: include gateways, backhaul, platform services and maintenance. Check collar weight and attachment for livestock.
Vehicles and assets: connectivity and power
For 4G vehicle trackers, confirm local bands, coverage, supply voltage and offline data upload. Compare battery trackers at the same reporting interval and temperature. Solar power also needs suitable exposure and mounting; advertised maximum standby time is not a deployment forecast.
Accuracy and RTK
Obstructions, satellite geometry and receiver design affect GPS accuracy. Multiple constellations alone do not guarantee centimetre precision. Evaluate RTK correction services, antennas and fixed-solution conditions. Measure position error separately from reporting delay.
Procurement checklist
Define area, device count, power and update intervals before requesting comparable quotes. Include installation, connectivity, platform and maintenance costs. Pilot in obstructed areas and check geofence false alerts, data export, access permissions and support before scaling up.
Is subscription-free GPS completely free?
Not necessarily. LoRa GPS can still require paid gateways, connectivity or platform services. Request all recurring charges and renewal terms.
Does GPS work accurately indoors?
Not reliably in every building. Bluetooth or UWB may be needed. Distinguish a newly measured location from the last valid position.
